Monday morning, a Harris County order mandating businesses require clients to wear masks went into effect. The grocer Kroger is avoiding turning customers away by offering masks for sale at the front of its stores.

"If a customer forgets their mask or face covering, don't worry -- we have disposable and reusable masks available for purchase at our front end," Kroger said in an emailed statement.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo issued the order June 19, after a surge in COVID-19 cases resulted in eight straight days of record hospitalizations in the county. The order officially expires June 30, though it will likely be extended.
