Coronavirus infections in San Antonio have skyrocketed over the past two weeks. The number of COVID-19 positive patients in local hospitals increased Sunday to 802 - quadruple the number in mid-June.
"This is now a wildfire that's gotten out of control," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "And while we were working to prevent it, it's now outside of containment. And we've got to do everything we can at a local level to get back in control of this spread."
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 10,147 area residents have tested positive and 109 have died.
