Alamo Farms, a new meat market located near the intersection of South Alamo and Interstate 35, opened for business Tuesday.

The new new business is a traditional meat market with cases full of meat, but it’s also a licensed processing facility that practices halal methods. Customers can pick out their own live animals for immediate processing should they choose to.

Located next to the main building is a breezy holding area filled with goats, lamb, roosters and chickens. Arrangements can be made for freshly processed beef as well, but pork will not be offered due to sanitation issues.

“We wanted to be as absolutely transparent about our process as possible to deliver the freshest meat possible,” co-owner Abo Mused said. “Customers can watch every step of the process in full view if they want to, and we have our own USDA inspector on site.”

Mused said that the fresh chickens, which he expects to be the top seller at Alamo Farms, can be processed in about 10 minutes.

Customers also can shop packaged meat from cases inside, as well as cut-to-order pieces from hanging sides of beef, goat and lamb.

“If a customer has any type of special request, we have the means to do it,” Mused said.

Fresh eggs are also a mainstay, collected on site and sold in crates of 30 for $5. Other deals found within the store include 10-pound bags of ice for $1 and 1-gallon jugs of milk for $2.

Alamo Farms is its full meat inventory, but Mused expects to be fully stocked up by Friday. The Mused family, which includes Abo’s brothers and fellow co-owners Omar and Mohamed Mused, has done business in the meat industry for 22 years, mostly in New York.
