Plate sale planned to help pay for funeral of San Antonio mother killed by suspected drunk driver
A barbecue plate sale is planned for Sunday to help fund funeral expenses for Destiny Rodriguez, a mother of four who was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver on June 13
Rodriguez was driving near Martin Luther King Boulevard and South Walters around 5:30 p.m., when she was struck by a yellow Hummer at the intersection. She died at the scene. Police said Leonel Martinez, the 38-year-old driver, and his passenger fled the scene on foot.
Police later located Martinez nearby and arrested him. He is charged with intoxicated manslaughter, intoxicated assault, failure to stop and render aid resulting in death and failure to stop and render aid resulting in substantial bodily injury. His bail is $115,000.
Franky Diablos, a South Side bar, is hosting a food plate sale in Rodriguez's honor this weekend. Event information sheds some light on Rodriguez's life.
The posts says the 27-year-old mom worked as a bartender and waitress at Lulu's. She was delivering pizza to support her family when she was hit by Martinez.
Barbecue plates will be $10. Customers can choose either chicken or sausage. Each option will be served with rice, beans and bread with a soda.
Franky Diablos is located at 1301 Roosevelt Road. The plate sale begins at noon.
